Fireworks and a Cheer for Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice at Deal Bringing Back Hostages
The announcement of an agreement expected to result in the release of hostages detained in the Gaza Strip for more than 24 months has generated joy and relief throughout the nation.
An organization which has campaigned for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza voiced “deep appreciation” for what it called an “historic breakthrough”.
The deal—which still must be approved by Israel’s war cabinet—involves the release of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in return for 250 Palestinian detainees serving life sentences in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from Gaza.
So far, 148 captives have come back—most as part of previous ceasefire deals—51 sets of remains have been recovered while eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Jubilant Scenes at Hostages Square
Jubilant scenes have unfolded in Hostages’ Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people assembled ahead of the agreement’s signing.
The gathering started applauding and dancing beneath US and Israeli flags—one woman holding up a sign that read: “We love Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” she expressed.
Another, Yael, aged 50, wept as she watched the crowd dancing.
“I’m very excited—it is such a comfort,” she said. “We must witness their return home to their families.”

Relatives Rejoice Using Pyrotechnics
The mom and sibling of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks to mark the announcement of his impending returned home.
“They are returning!... Matan is coming home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed while holding her child.
Viki Cohen, the parent of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, shared online: “My son, you are returning home.”
The delight could be felt throughout the avenues in Tel Aviv following the news.
Freed Hostages Offer Prayers and Raise Glasses
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari rejoiced with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of thankfulness, then cheering “L’chaim”, meaning “for life”. She has advocated for the release of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their sibling Liran Berman wrote: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You’re coming home.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was captured in October 2023, with her remains found in an underground passage in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other captives’ relatives in advocating for a deal which ensures the return of all those still being held within Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is real. We’ve been waiting for so long and here it is,” he expressed.
He stated he was “broken” that his cousin would not be among those returning to their homes but was “radiant with happiness” for the relatives of the hostages who are finally returning.
Eitan Horn was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, said she experienced like she was living “a dream state”.
“We are immensely thankful to the President and all he has done on our behalf. It seems like it might be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan seems nearer than ever,” she commented.
But she cautioned that it was still too early to rejoice.
“Until the last hostage is here, we’re not opening the champagne. We’re going to keep fighting... until it’s over,” she affirmed.
“So many things can happen until the last moment so this is why we are extremely cautious. We just want to express gratitude to all who was involved in the efforts and make sure this agreement is done... We shall rejoice only when we have the last hostage safely home.”
Eitan was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was released from detainment through a truce agreement earlier in the year.
