‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s journey from injury table to goals with Athletic Bilbao

Thehe debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta competed in English soil, an young appearing for the reserve team against German opponents at the English ground in the 2015 season, he hit the target. The second time he appeared in the country, against Sunderland two months later, he scored. His third outing, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, well, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, too. “In fact,” he says, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” So Athletic did what they had to do: he was replaced.

“I became very upset,” the forward reveals, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I remember reading about the Red Devils, the typical thing. I have no idea how true it was, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At the facility, the city, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; after it, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another trip to Britain, now to play Newcastle in the UCL on Wednesday. Uttering the name makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a challenging campaign for Athletic, partly because of the demands of their participation. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. Yet, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation within him.

In the the period since he had rejoined the team, the striker has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a final at home by United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river flanked by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the UCL, where they are countercultural and debuting in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he admits.

The player believed it difficult enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player his father and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that produced the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he went through a torn cruciate, the cut, a drop in category and a recall before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to experience the peak of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the European competition.

“Entering the youth system thinking you won’t reach the first team but with every stage you go through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his debut and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and I tear my cruciate.

“A massive setback but In retrospect as a turning point because it shifted the perspective. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it helps. You develop habits new to you. Previously I was casual, but I did the sessions and then return home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Strength training. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: do them.

“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players repeatedly. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”

You also have to play. Guruzeta departed upset in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he netted three goals in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. If you turn it round, dedication, confidence, and if one day a vacancy arises where you play, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. The trophy success, compete continentally, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. Particularly after the previous season which, sometimes, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
